JPClay at The Joy Cochran Gallery at The Footlight Club

An exhibition born from the connections formed when JP Clay became part of the neighborhood in 2025, opens to examine how we occupy, shape, and transform space.

Curated and presented by studio instructors and leadership, the show grows out of the studio’s commitment to hold space for members and students - through instruction, guidance, or independent practice.

Holding space in the studio is more than upkeep, it’s a practice that honors openness, peace, and community as intrinsically valuable. The exhibition expands on that practice by inviting artists to investigate how bodies inhabit space, how energy and movement alter it, and how we decorate, break open, balance within, and stand firm in our own being.

“This exhibition grew directly from relationships formed when JP Clay joined the neighborhood,” said owner, Gena Mavuli. “As a staff and as a studio, one of our most important roles is to hold space - sometimes by teaching, sometimes by stepping back - and this show considers that deliberate practice.
